Formative Assessment
Formative assessment allows teachers to see how their students are understanding the content that is being taught, and allows teachers to make changes in instruction methods. Formative assessment can gauge understanding by students claiming or showing that they 'get it' or not (by hands, or another instrument), or you can ask students specific questions that relate to important content. By collecting this type of assessment, teachers can reteach elements that are foggy, or get the go-ahead to continue on with the unit. Bellow are forty different ways that teachers can close a lesson in a way that is constructive for both the teacher and the students.

Shakespeare
To formatively assess Shakespeare, you have to decide what you value in your unit. My goals are to have my students able to read, interpret, understand, and relate to Shakespeare, so these are things that I need to monitor in their learning process.
